I’m Sarah Hunt-Frank and I create one-of-kind, hand-built vases, using elegant lines to depict images in nature. I admire Japanese art: the subtle suggestion of an image with a few simple strokes, the delicate balance of an aesthetic. I created a distinctive style of slab-rolled, two-seamed vases in tall elegant forms, with delicately implied images.

My vases have aesthetically-pleasing almond-shaped silhouettes, the smooth surface contrasting with the rough opening at the top of the vase, and decorated with designs inspired by Japanese art. In all of my work, I strive for sophisticated, elegant forms and simple, suggestive images.

The Artist In Her Natural Habitat.

Building

I build all of my vases from a rolled slab. Each vase is unique, with it's own character.  From the size and shape, the decorative painting and glaze choices, to the organic opening at the top, each vase has it's own personality.

Painting

I hand-paint my pieces with underglaze, which is then sealed under the clear glaze during firing in the kiln.  I carefully choose where the image is going to lay on the vase: where it will balance the vessel aesthetically.

Finishing

I love what I do!  Whether I am building vases, sanding, painting, glazing, or grinding the bottoms smooth, I love it.  I even love meeting wonderful people in my booth at art fairs, so stop in and say, hello!
